Feature developments & user research

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual online challenge where writers complete a novel in 30 days. Many participants become authors, and we hoped some would publish through the Pronoun ebook platform.

To drive signups, I suggested we offer an exclusive gift: ebook templates tailored to the most popular NaNo genres. Like any good gift, this seemed both playful and practical. It also drove engagement, since authors needed to log in and upload a manuscript. I tested my theory by surveying NaNoWriMo authors on a variety of gift ideas. The templates won by a large margin, and seeing hundreds of authors publish books in those layouts is one of my proudest accomplishments at Pronoun.

I worked with design (to create the templates) and engineering (to implement them).

A/B testing landing pages

I created several NaNoWriMo-specific landing pages:

  • One with Pronoun-branded language

  • Another with lighthearted NaNoWriMo humor

  • The last with a personal letter from Pronoun’s “Author Happiness Advocate” (me)

After two weeks of A/B testing, I switched to the page with the highest conversion rate.

NaNoWriMo marketing materials

I collaborated with the design and marketing teams to create everything from tote bags and pins to social media graphics. One of my favorite products was a print flyer. I chose the quote and wrote the back copy.
